چکیده

Experimentally observed anisotropic ion heating in helicon plasma sources may result from the interaction of ions with ion-sound turbulence. The ion-sound turbulence develops due to excitation of the short scale, kinetic, parametric ion-sound instability. From the quasilinear equation for the ion distribution function, which includes the induced scattering of ion-sound waves by ions, the turbulent heating rate is determined. This anomalous ion heating is predominantly across the magnetic field and can lead to strong turbulence effects, such as the collective statistical effect of ion-sound turbulence on individual ion orbits ~resonance broadening!. Resonance broadening is a strong turbulence saturation mechanism for ion-sound turbulence. The energy density of the ion-sound turbulence in the saturated state, the ion and electron heating rates, as well as the effective collision frequency arising from the anomalous absorption of the helicon wave, are estimated and compared to experimental data. © 2003 American Institute of Physics. @DOI: 10.1063/1.1569487#

RF absorption and ion heating in helicon sources.

Experimental data are presented that are consistent with the hypothesis that anomalous rf absorption in helicon sources is due to electron scattering arising from parametrically driven ion-acoustic waves downstream from the antenna. Also presented are ion temperature measurements demonstrating anisotropic heating (T( perpendicular)>T(parallel)) at the edge of the discharge. The most likely expl...

Design and parametric study of a radio-frequency cathode

Hollow cathodes have been commonly used as the electron source and neutralizer for ion thrusters and other electric propulsion devices (like Hall thrusters)till 1960s. They provide high electron current density by using low electric power and gas. However, they have some disadvantages: Hollow cathode’s lifetime is limited by the erosion and evaporation of the insert. Additionally, impurities in...

Non-collisional Ion Heating and Magnetic Turbulence in the RFP

strong non-collisional ion heating occurs during sawtooth-like magnetic reconnection events in Madison Symmetric Torus, where ions are transiently heated to as high as 3 keV, often exceeding the electron temperature. The free energy source for this ion heating is the mean magnetic energy. Measured magnetic fluctuations exhibit an exponential spectral density consistent with dissipative nonlinea...

Spatially limited ion acoustic wave activity in low-pressure helicon discharges

Ion acoustic wave phenomena are studied and compared in two low-pressure argon discharges created by helicon sources. The wave amplitudes are spatially localized near the edge of a plasma column as the amplitudes of the “mirror waves” that are separated from the helicon source frequency by the ion wave frequency. Dependencies of the ion wave on radial position, pressure, input power, and magnet...

Transport of thermal plasma above the auroral ionosphere in the presence of electrostatic ion-cyclotron turbulence

The electron component of intensive electric currents ̄owing along the geomagnetic ®eld lines excites turbulence in the thermal magnetospheric plasma. The protons are then scattered by the excited electromagnetic waves, and as a result the plasma is stable. As the electron and ion temperatures of the background plasma are approximately equal each other, here electrostatic ion-cyclotron (EIC) tu...
